Surviving the Bot Lane Meta - OMEN LOL GUIDE BY STIXXAY

The bot lane meta right now is pretty crazy and the most diverse in terms of champion classes it’s been in years. You may have seen it in your solo queue games and watched things like Heimerdinger bot this past weekend in competitive League of Legends.

All of this is happening right now because the build path for traditional AD Carries / Marksman that rely on crit damage has been nerfed by increasing the gold amount for Zeal items. They also increased the overall cost of Infinity Edge which delayed the power spike of AD Carries who rely on Infinity Edge by an additional 5 - 10 minutes.

This created an opening for other classes of champions to compete for the space in bot lane since they could have a more immediate impact on the game much earlier on and snowball for wins. This doesn’t mean all AD Carries are dead, there are a few AD Carries you can still play in this meta.

Bot lane is an all out war right now - especially in solo queue where everyone is itchy to pull the trigger and go all-in. That means the most important attribute you want in an AD Carry is mobility.

Here are the three champions you should master if you really want to just play an AD Carry:

  • Ezreal

  • Lucian

  • Kai’sa

Keep in mind that if you want to maximize your survivability as an AD Carry, keep your bans in solo queue targeted to champions that can basically ignore any amount of peel you might have. Basically assassins.

These are the champions I always like to ban if I’m playing an AD Carry:

  • Talon

  • Rengar

  • Camille

When the three viable AD Carries are banned or you want to explore the new bot lane meta - the three most popular fighters I usually see are Yasuo, Irelia, and Darius. I personally don’t think they’re that great and that people are overreacting to the changes. All the solo queue games right now are super hectic and no one knows what’s really going on.

The general strategy for fighter champions versus AD Carries right now is to survive the early laning phase and even giving up some CS if it means you can stay in lane longer. While you might be at a disadvantage in the first few levels, you’ll start outscaling the enemy AD carry much harder just through gaining experience. At level six you can all-in with your support and usually kill your opponents if they’re not careful.

Yasuo, Irelia, and Darius all have lots of damage, dueling power, and CC abilities. Yasuo and Irelia also have mobility that let them farm minions with relative safety.

If you are playing with a bruiser / fighter, it's really important to have CC with your support. During picks and bans, make sure you communicate to your support that you want to play a fighter and need additional crowd control to help with skirmishes.

These are the support champions that work the best with fighters at the moment:

  • Alistar

  • Braum

  • Tahm Kench

  • Shen

Work with your support and make sure they understand that you won’t be looking to be too aggressive at first against a marksman. Even though they can poke you out, because they scale so slowly now, you just have to make sure you don’t feed initially. You’re much stronger from levels 6 - 15 and most games just never get to late game in solo queue.

The other class that you’ll see in the bot lane right now are mages. While you might see Vladimir and Heimerdinger in competitive - Brand is the mage you want to play in solo queue. He’s probably the most popular bot-lane mage in solo queue right now and for a good reason - he’s obnoxious. It doesn’t matter if Brand is behind or ahead since he always has a ton of AoE damage and is super strong.

Brand is just ok vs AD Carries, but versus Fighters in the bot lane he’s amazing. Fighters will always need to go in for CS and you can use your range to destroy them every time. When you both hit level 6, Brand’s ultimate guarantees that you’ll have the burst to match a bruiser/fighter bot lane. Just make sure to stay out of their range and poke them out.

  • Take Teleport if you’re versus another AD Carry or Mage.

  • Teleport helps you get back to lane faster and not lose tempo.

  • Take Heal if you’re versus a bruiser / fighter that can all-in you.

  • If you don’t have Heal versus a bruiser / fighter you’ll always be worried about getting all-in’d and won’t be able to play comfortably in lane.

Like I said before, I’m not completely sold on the idea that AD Carries are completely dead. While the bot lane meta definitely is the craziest it’s been - it’s a bit overhyped in my opinion. Solo queue is definitely more difficult since people just play whatever they want and random things because they think it’s more fun. Ranged champions will always still exist in the game since you need them to siege towers.

In summary, as a general guideline for solo queue:

  • Mages do well versus traditional Marksmen / ADC

  • Fighters do well versus traditional Marksmen / ADC

  • Mages do well versus Bruisers

  • Ezreal and Lucian are the exception

  • Kai’sa is situational
